Where will this summer take you? Perhaps to a babbling brook running through the mountains in Chugach State Park, where you’ll stop for a snack break, maybe spot a moose, and look at the beautiful green peaks rising all around. Please enjoy the next feature in this series highlighting our summer teen adventure program way up north: Alaska Mountains & Coast!
This program is perfect for:
- Students interested in exploring the wonders of the state of Alaska on a more intermediate trip rather than an advanced backcountry expedition;
- Students looking to stay within the US, but excited to explore landscapes that look very different than the rest of the country;
- Students new to camping and hiking but are looking for something a little more challenging than a beginner-level trip;
- Students excited to experience new things: the midnight sun, the Alaskan wildlife, ice climbing on a glacier, sea-kayaking in fjords and more!
- Alumni who loved our Iceland Mountains & Coast, Costa Rica Mountains & Coast, or Golden State Adventure trips and are looking for the next step;
- Alumni who loved our Maine’s Downeast Explorer trip and are looking for a similar itinerary in a different location!
Fast, Fun Facts about AKMC:
- Sledding in July! You’ll likely come across snow at higher altitudes on some of your hikes, and you may be able to do some sledding and have some snowball fights… in July!
- Life above Tree-line: Due to Alaska’s latitude, a lot of the hiking on the trip will occur in the “alpine zone,” where no trees grow. Because of this, you’ll get awesome panoramic views along your hikes without having to peep through trees!
- Travel flexibility: We know Alaska can be challenging to get to, but we’ve built the itinerary to allow for multiple different arrival/departure windows, to help expand flight options available to families.
- Backcountry/Front country: Our trip spends three nights backcountry camping – two while hiking and one while kayaking! The other eight nights are spent front country camping – at campsites with running water and showers.
