Garth Franklin

A Massachusetts native and rising senior at Colby College, Garth Franklin feels most at home on the top of a mountain.   He’ll have plenty of opportunity to feel at home as he ascends the New England peaks on our Downeast Explorer and New England Mountains and Coast trips this summer.   Garth is a rising senior at Colby where he is studying Biochemistry and is a midfielder on Colby’s Varsity Lacrosse team.   An avid hiker, skier, and rock-climber, Garth spends as much time as he can adventuring in the Maine wilderness on the weekends.   In addition to his love of the outdoors, Garth brings a great deal of leadership experience to Apogee this summer.   Garth led a pre-orientation wilderness trip for incoming freshmen at Colby last August.   Additionally, Garth has worked in a summer camp-like setting at a country club near his hometown, where he was a lifeguard, swim lesson instructor, sports camp assistant and arts and crafts teacher.     In high school, Garth also served as the captain of his lacrosse team.   Outside of his interest in the outdoors and athletics, Garth has a passion for both woodworking and French, which we hope he’ll be able to share in some capacity with his groups this summer.   Garth can’t wait to hit the trails this summer with his groups!   Garth is certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR.

Julie Levine

We are delighted to have  Julie Levine back to wind her way over hill and dale as she leads our  Vermont to Montreal trip this summer.   A rising senior at Colby College, Julie is passionate about everything she does (and there is very little that she doesn’t do!).   Growing up in the small town of Andover, New Jersey, Julie was a three-sport athlete on her high school’s varsity swim, soccer, and track teams, and served as the Captain of her swim team.   She was the Editor-in-Chief of her school’s yearbook, and President of her National Honor Society.   Julie had a great summer in 2011 leading our Cape Cod & the Islands trip, and has spent other summers riding horses in Montana and learning to cook paella and flamenco dance in Spain.   At Colby, she double majors in Biology and Psychology.   Also at school, Julie was selected to lead a Colby orientation trip for incoming freshman to Maine’s Baxter State Park.   When she isn’t studying, chairing a committee, studying abroad in Scotland, or helping incoming students find their way, Julie finds time every week to ride horses in the gorgeous hills around Colby.   We know that Julie’s students in Vermont this summer are going to love her boundless enthusiasm, her seasoned leadership, and the warmth and care that she brings to every new friendship.   Julie is certified in Wilderness First Aid and CPR.

Pat Carey

Pat Carey grew up in Lloyd Harbor, New York and just graduated from Bucknell University with a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.   In his time outside of the classroom at Bucknell, Pat was very involved in all different parts of the campus community.   He played club soccer, did improvisational comedy and mentored younger students as both a physics tutor and an RA.   Though most recently he’s filled his summers with engineering internships, Pat is a seasoned camp counselor.     He helped develop the activities for a local beach summer camp in his hometown, and worked there for two summers.   He loved both the work he did with his campers, and that he was able to bike to the camp every day.   Pat is very excited to combine his favorite mode of transit with his love of kids again this summer on his  Vermont to Montreal trips!   Pat is certified in First Aid and CPR.

Tim Hunt

Tim Hunt’s interests range from white-water kayaking to renaissance a cappella music, and they include pretty much everything in between.   Tim hails from Oakland, California, where he was a member of the Pacific Boychoir Academy for eleven years.   With this world-renowned choir, Tim went on tour through Italy, France, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and China.   Tim is a rising junior at Bowdoin College, where he’s studying Neuroscience, plays trombone in the Jazz Combo, and runs for both the Varsity Cross Country and Track teams.     At Bowdoin, Tim satisfies his passion for the outdoors by spending weekends on skiing and hiking trips with the Outing Club.   This past winter, he participated in the Outing Club’s advanced winter skills course, where he learned about safe winter camping and mountaineering techniques, and this spring he completed their leadership training program.   Needless to say, Tim is an experienced outdoor adventurer; he’s backpacked through Death Valley National Park, along the famous Pacific Crest, and through New Hampshire’s Presidential range.   He’s an avid cyclist, both road and mountain, and loves to surf.   Tim led a pre-orientation bicycle tour trip for incoming freshmen at Bowdoin last August, and worked for two summers as a counselor at his choir’s summer camp.   Tim is looking forward to sharing his love for the outdoors and home state with his California Mountains and Coast groups this summer!   Tim is a Wilderness First Responder and is certified in CPR.

Drew Williams

Drew Williams is fired up to be spending his summer leading our Cape Cod and the Islands trips.   A rising junior at Lafayette College, Drew is studying Geology and Anthropology/Sociology.   A nature-lover, Drew loves rock-climbing and hiking.   In fact, as a native of Collegeville, Pennsylvania, Drew worked for years as a rock-climbing instructor at the Philadelphia Rock-Climbing Gym.   A captain of his high school’s varsity track and field team, Drew still throws himself high in the air on a regular basis as a varsity pole-vaulter on Lafayette’s Division I Track & Field team.   Drew is also a bit of a world traveler.   He’s notched off Costa Rica, Spain, Italy, France, and Morocco on his travel belt.   After his adventures with Apogee this summer, Drew will spend his fall semester in Costa Rica, exploring the jungles and cities of a country he’s already in love with.   Even with all of his far-flung travels, Drew can’t wait to hit the Cape this summer and share his love of adventure, and the confidence that it instills, with his Cape Cod groups.   Drew is certified in First Aid and CPR.
